Thank You
You showed the county that we will not stand by and let our river front and our downtown be compromised. Because of you we now have the chance for meaningful input working with the county to find the proper size and place for a new jail. We will have to watch carefully how the proposed committee is stacked, but we will have input. No doubt this will involve studying the National Institute of Corrections documents as well as evaluating the current use of our jail. With some study, it is possible we will find that we can make adequate space for those we need to incarcerate, offer alternatives for those who require less resources, and perhaps even rethink the 'business as usual' approach to incarceration (as suggested by the NIC report on the Eau Claire jail.)

Jail Project: Back to Drawing Board
The County Board had created a special committee to look for alternative locations for a new jail. Even though one committee member suggested that there was no need to look for alternative locations, and that they should just go ahead and approve the same riverfront location, cooler heads prevailed. They are now at least going through the motions of looking at alternative locations.
Read the Leader Telegrams Post Mortem on the Riverfront Jail. despite the terrible and ill advised editorials in the Leader Telegrams about the jail project, they do seem to report the fact correctly most of the time.
